Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP in Tip-On Jacket

This pressing belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds series, the reissue line Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds launched in the spring of 2022 to honor the label Lester Koenig founded in 1951. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and Craft points out that Grundman is himself a Contemporary Records alum. The disc is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket, catalog number CR00601, which carries Koenig's original liner notes, dated June 6, 1960, and Fred Lyon's cover photograph taken inside the club.

Shelly Manne & His Men taped this set in September 1959 at the Black Hawk, a nightclub in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, and Contemporary issued it in 1960 as the first of four volumes from the engagement. Koenig's notes describe it as Manne's first recording made in a night club: Manne phoned the label from the Black Hawk, microphones were on the bandstand the following day, and a plan for one album grew to four once the playbacks had been heard back in Los Angeles. The jacket credits Summertime, Our Delight and Poinciana to the night of September 22, 1959, with sound by Howard Holzer.

Manne leads from the drums with Joe Gordon on trumpet, Richie Kamuca on tenor saxophone, Victor Feldman on piano and Monty Budwig on bass. Per the notes, Feldman, then better known on vibes, filled the piano chair for Russ Freeman, who was away touring Europe with Benny Goodman. The five pieces are Gershwin and Heyward's Summertime, Tadd Dameron's Our Delight, Poinciana, trombonist Frank Rosolino's jazz waltz Blue Daniel, and Bill Holman's brief A Gem From Tiffany, which Koenig writes had been the band's theme since 1955, named for the Los Angeles club where Holman wrote it. The LP keeps that original five-track program; the alternate take of Blue Daniel added to the 1991 CD reissue is not part of it.

Craft's announcement for the series notes Manne's work as a bebop drummer alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and his Hollywood soundtrack credits including The Wild One and The Man With the Golden Arm. AllMusic's Scott Yanow calls the extended performances "easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans."
