180-Gram Black Vinyl, Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, Tip-On Jacket

This LP belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Craft Recordings launched to mark 70 years of the Los Angeles jazz label. Bernie Grundman mastered it all-analog from the original tapes, it was pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and it comes in a Stoughton Old Style tip-on jacket. The series' six key Contemporary albums include titles by Art Pepper, Barney Kessel, Benny Carter and Hampton Hawes alongside this one.

The jacket follows the stereo issue: a STEREO oval on the front, the catalog line Stereo Records CR00391 "in association with Contemporary Records," and a black-and-gold Stereo Records label on the disc. On the back sit Lester Koenig's liner notes, dated August 27, 1956, under the heading "Shelly Manne and His Friends, Vol. 2," with portraits of all three players and the original technical notes on the Westrex 45-45 StereoDisk cutting system. The runouts are etched CR00391-A BG and CR00391-B BG.

Per the jacket credits, Shelly Manne on drums, André Previn on piano and Leroy Vinnegar on bass recorded the album on August 17, 1956, at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles, with Koenig producing and Roy DuNann engineering. Koenig had suggested songs from the Broadway production of My Fair Lady, and the trio arranged and cut the whole record in that one session. First issued in 1956, it was the first album made up entirely of jazz versions of songs from a single Broadway musical.
