Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180-Gram LP

This is the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition of Two Headed Freap, issued on May 27, 2022, the year the album turned 50. The series is all-analog: Kevin Gray mastered this LP from the original master tapes, with the back cover crediting the lacquer work to his Cohearent Audio, and it is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany. The center labels carry the period line "A Division of United Artists Records, Inc.", as the 1972 issue did.

Recorded at Van Gelder Recording Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on January 20 and 21, 1972, and produced by George Butler, it was the organist's debut as a leader, first issued as BST-84382. Blue Note co-founder Francis Wolff had noticed Foster on Grant Green's live album Alive!, recorded in 1970. In a 2022 PostGenre interview, Foster discussed how "Chunky" led Butler to sign him; it opens side A.

Five Foster originals sit beside three soul covers: Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," Wilson Pickett's "Don't Knock My Love" and the Gamble and Huff song "Drowning in the Sea of Love," a hit for Joe Simon. Wade Marcus arranged the date for a band that included guitarist Gene Bertoncini, bassists George Duvivier and Gordon Edwards, vibraphonist George Devens, harpist Gene Bianco, conga player Arthur Jenkins and drummer Jimmy Johnson.

"Mystic Brew" has been sampled widely in hip-hop, by A Tribe Called Quest on "Electric Relaxation" and J. Cole on "Forbidden Fruit" among others, and covered by the Vijay Iyer Trio and BadBadNotGood. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine rated the album 4.5 stars. It was the first of five albums Foster made for Blue Note in the 1970s, followed by Sweet Revival, Live: Cookin' with Blue Note at Montreux, On the Avenue and Cheshire Cat. He went on to play on Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life and George Benson's Breezin', and returned to the label in 2022 with Reboot.
