Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram LP in a Tip-On Jacket With Obi

This is the Craft Recordings edition of Where? in the Original Jazz Classics Series, catalog number CR00718, issued March 29, 2024. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA), and the record was pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. The tip-on jacket reproduces the original New Jazz artwork, the center labels carry the New Jazz design, and the runouts are etched. The obi reprints Pete Welding's DownBeat review, which gave the album four and a half stars.

Where? was Ron Carter's first album as a leader. Rudy Van Gelder recorded it at his studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on June 20, 1961, with Esmond Edwards supervising, and New Jazz first issued it as NJ 8265. Carter plays bass and cello, with Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, alto saxophone and flute, Mal Waldron on piano, George Duvivier on bass and Charles Persip on drums. Carter and Dolphy already knew each other from Chico Hamilton's group.

Joe Goldberg's original liner notes, reprinted on the back cover, explain the two-bass setup: Duvivier takes the bass chair whenever Carter moves to cello, and on "Bass Duet" the two state the theme together. Carter wrote "Rally" and "Bass Duet"; "Where?" and "Saucer Eyes" are Randy Weston tunes, "Yes, Indeed" is Sy Oliver's, and "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise" is Sigmund Romberg's. The cover photo shows Carter holding both instruments, which saves the liner notes some explaining.

Carter went on to join Herbie Hancock in the Miles Davis Quintet. Craft's reissue announcement calls him a three-time Grammy winner and the most recorded jazz bassist of all time.
