Rhino Reserve 180 Gram Vinyl LP

This pressing belongs to Rhino Reserve, the label's audiophile series. Matthew Lutthans cut the lacquers from the original analog master at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California. It was issued on July 24, 2026, in one of the weekly waves of Rhino's Spirit of '76 campaign, a summer program of 23 reissues drawn from albums first released in 1976.

The jacket keeps the original two-part sequencing, printed on both the front and back of the sleeve: a Slow Side of four songs and a Fast Side of five. The cover art is based on Renoir's painting Bal du moulin de la Galette, with Stewart set into the center of the crowd in period dress.

A Night on the Town was Stewart's seventh album, produced by Tom Dowd and recorded between December 1975 and April 1976 at Cherokee in Los Angeles, Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield, Alabama, Criteria in Miami and Caribou Ranch in Colorado. It went to No. 1 on the UK albums chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and the RIAA certified it double platinum. It was his last UK No. 1 studio album until Time in 2013.

"Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)" became Stewart's second No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, even though some radio stations banned it over its lyrics. Britt Ekland speaks the French passage, and Jerry Jumonville plays the saxophone solo. The Slow Side also carries his cover of Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is the Deepest" and the two-part "The Killing of Georgie," the story of a gay friend who is turned out by his family and later killed during a robbery.

The session credits include Steve Cropper, Donald Dunn and Al Jackson Jr., the Muscle Shoals players Roger Hawkins, David Hood, Barry Beckett and Pete Carr, plus Joe Walsh, David Lindley and David Foster. Arif Mardin is among the string arrangers.
