Black Vinyl

True Violet is Rayland Baxter's fifth studio album and his first since If I Were a Butterfly in 2022. ATO Records issued it on October 23, 2026 under catalog number ATO0727, pressed as a single black LP at 33 1/3 RPM in a standard jacket with a printed inner sleeve carrying the full lyrics and the per-track credits.

ATO's own notes describe where the record came from: for half a year Baxter wrote every night, in a chair beside his bed at his home outside Nashville, and the label calls what came out of that material "a sweeping, tender, sometimes raucous ode to the processes of undoing, reckoning and reconciliation."

Baxter plays acoustic guitars and sings lead across the record, with Barney Cortez on electric guitar and mandolin, Brian Lang on bass, double bass and tic-tac bass, Ben LeCourt on drums, Aaron Embry on piano, Hammond, Rhodes, synthesizer and theremin, Harrison Whitford on electric slide guitar, and Paul Butler on clarinet, baritone saxophone, dulcimer, Wurlitzer and synthesizer. Nick Waterhouse appears on tambourine and vocals, and Roberta Freeman and Carol Hatchett sing background vocals. The closing song, "Oh My Love," carries a different lineup: Zac Rae on piano, Jay Bellerose on drums and percussion, and Jennifer Condos on bass.

Baxter wrote or co-wrote all eleven songs. Tyler Ballgame shares a writing credit on "Better Man" and "Bad Love," and Kevin Rhodes on "Oh My Love." "Better Man" opens side one; ATO released its video ahead of the album.

Baxter has recorded for ATO since his 2012 debut Feathers & Fishhooks, followed by Imaginary Man in 2015, Wide Awake in 2018, Good Mmornin in 2019 and If I Were a Butterfly in 2022. He is based in Nashville, Tennessee.
