This gray pressing of Reel 2 Reel 4 Real is the independent record store edition, issued alongside a standard black LP and a CD. It carries catalog number BOR26006, and its center label artwork bears the Bordello Records and Soundly marks. The ten songs are cut five to a side.

The title describes part of the method. Hubbard has said the record is called Reel 2 Reel 4 Real "because I think there were three songs...that we did right to tape." On this LP, two of them fall on side A, "El Diablo Esta Ganando" and "Dog or Wolf," and the third, "Tip Your Hat to the Black Crow," opens side B.

It is his 20th studio album, and his return to independent release after two records for Big Machine. Jonathan Tyler co-produced eight of the songs at his studio in Austin; Mike Campbell recorded the other two at his studio in Los Angeles.

Kyle Schneider plays drums, John Michael Schoepf bass, and Hubbard's son Lucas electric and resonator guitar. Bukka Allen adds organ, Cody Braun of Reckless Kelly fiddle and mandolin, and Tobin Dale slide guitar. Hubbard's own store places the result in Texas garage rock, in the line of the 13th Floor Elevators and Mouse and the Traps, and says it is meant to be "played loud. Real loud."

"Cassette Mix Tape" opens the record and was its lead single, with the video above.
