Rhino Reserve 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP, Rocktober 2026

This edition of Sail Away is part of Rhino Reserve, the label's audiophile series built around analog sources, 180-gram vinyl and pressing at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California. It is one of the limited titles in Rhino's Rocktober 2026 program, which goes to brick-and-mortar record stores rather than general retail. The lacquer was cut from the original flat analog master by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and the album fits on a single 180-gram black LP.

Sail Away was Newman's third studio album, issued by Reprise on May 23, 1972, with Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman producing. Newman wrote every song on it, and several had already been recorded by others before he cut them himself. Alan Price had taken "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear" into the UK charts in 1967, and Harry Nilsson recorded it for Harry in 1969. "Lonely at the Top" was written with Frank Sinatra in mind, though Sinatra never recorded it. "Last Night I Had a Dream" is a re-recording, with a different arrangement, of a single Newman issued in 1968.

Rolling Stone placed the album at number 268 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums ranked it 582 in 2000. In 2021 Brian Wilson put it third among his "5 Albums I Can't Live Without" for Spin. The songs have had long lives on screen: Joe Cocker's 1986 version of "You Can Leave Your Hat On" was used in 9½ Weeks, and "Burn On," which refers to the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire, plays over the opening titles of Major League.
