Rhino Reserve 180g Black Vinyl

This single-LP edition of Good Old Boys belongs to Rhino Reserve, the label's audiophile series built on 180-gram vinyl, analog sources and pressing at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California. Its lacquers were cut from the original analog master by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and it was issued among Rhino's Rocktober 2026 titles.

Good Old Boys was Randy Newman's fourth studio album, released by Reprise in 1974 and produced by Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman. It was his first record to find major commercial success, reaching No. 36 on the Billboard 200 and spending 21 weeks on the chart. Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Bernie Leadon of the Eagles sing backing vocals, and Ry Cooder plays guitar on "Back on My Feet Again."

Newman first sketched the songs as a concept album about Johnny Cutler, an everyman of the Deep South, and demoed them in February 1973. The finished album widened the view to the region as a whole. "Rednecks" opens it as a satire aimed at both institutional racism in the South and the hypocrisy of the North's response, "Louisiana 1927" recalls the Great Mississippi Flood, and "Every Man a King," a song written by Huey Long himself, leads into Newman's own "Kingfish."

Robert Christgau gave the album an A on release, and Rolling Stone placed it at No. 394 on its 2012 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
