Indie Exclusive Arctic Pearl Vinyl, Two LPs

No Human Tongue Can Tell is the first solo album by Radie Peat, the singer of the Dublin folk group Lankum. She made it with John "Spud" Murphy, who has produced Lankum's records, and played the intersecting parts herself: nine songs, a little under an hour of music, cut across four sides.

The method goes back about fifteen years, to a documentary Peat watched about Mike Oldfield making Tubular Bells. "The idea just stuck that I would like to try record like that, where you write and play all the intersecting parts," she has said. "I found the idea of being limited by your own mind and abilities, with all the blind spots and personal preferences, very appealing."

The songs are drawn largely from the folk tradition and retold from the woman's side, with recurring subjects of struggle, endurance and love in its more complicated forms. Peat has described "The Moon and Stars" as carrying coded references to unwanted pregnancy, sung in the protagonist's own voice. "Cailín Deas" closes the record at just under thirteen minutes and "Dark Horse on the Wind" runs past eight, so the two-disc cut is a question of running time as much as of playback. Peat has named Shirley and Dolly Collins, Lal Waterson, Karen Dalton, Jackson C Frank, Katie Kim, Enya and Liam Weldon among the singers and writers behind the album.

Peat describes the work as "communicating hundreds of years of other people's experiences, that have been absorbed into the songs from generations and generations before you."

This is the indie-exclusive pressing: two Arctic Pearl LPs, issued by Rough Trade Records under catalogue number RT0629LPE. The standard edition is pressed on black vinyl.
