Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP

This edition of The Cry! belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Craft Recordings runs with Acoustic Sounds, whose CEO Chad Kassem supervises it. Bernie Grundman, a Contemporary Records alumnus, cut the lacquers from the original analog master tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain. Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it comes in an old-style tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton Printing. The catalog number is CR00712.

The Cry! was one of twelve Contemporary titles Craft announced for the series in 2024, a run that also took in albums by Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster and Helen Humes. Contemporary, the label Lester Koenig founded in 1951, first issued it in 1963, in mono as M 3610 and in stereo as S7610.

The session took place at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles on November 21, 1962, with Koenig producing. Prince Lasha plays flute against Sonny Simmons's alto saxophone; All About Jazz, quoted in Craft's notes, observed that Lasha "prefers a wooden flute." Two bassists share the date, Gary Peacock and Mark Proctor, with Proctor sitting out "Bojangles," "Lost Generation" and "A.Y." Gene Stone plays drums, and Lasha and Simmons share the writing credit on all eight pieces.

Craft's notes credit "Congo Call" and "Bojangles" with giving the quintet's free jazz an identity of its own, apart from Ornette Coleman's influence. AllMusic's Alex Henderson rated the album four stars. Lasha and Simmons recorded together again on Firebirds, and Simmons was signed to Quincy Jones's Qwest Records roughly three decades later.
