RSD Essentials #105 Pop Bottle Clear Vinyl With Booklet

Entry 105 in the Record Store Day Essentials series, a single LP pressed in the pale translucent blue-green the program calls Pop Bottle Clear, a color chosen to echo the vintage look of the original artwork. The audio is a new remaster for vinyl, and the complete original booklet appears on a vinyl edition for the first time: black-and-white band photographs, and a credits heart listing Courtney Love on vocals and guitars, Eric Erlandson on guitars, Kristen Pfaff on bass, piano and background vocals, and Patty Schemel on drums. The disc label prints the David Geffen Company logo and a 1994 recording credit beside a 2026 one.

Critics named Live Through This the best album of 1994 in Rolling Stone, Spin, the Los Angeles Times and the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll. It went gold that December and had sold 1.6 million copies in the United States by 2010, finishing at number 86 on Billboard's year-end Billboard 200. Rolling Stone placed the cover at number 13 on its 2024 list of the hundred best album covers.

Hole signed to DGC, a Geffen subsidiary, in February 1992. The Smashing Pumpkins recommended the Georgia studio where the sessions ran, having made Siamese Dream there. Kristen Pfaff, formerly of Janitor Joe and a classically trained cellist, had joined the band in 1993, and Sean Slade has said every bass part on the album came off the basic tracks with no overdubs needed. Pfaff died in June 1994, two months after the album's release. Kurt Cobain sang uncredited backing vocals on "Asking for It" and "Softer, Softest" during a visit to the sessions.

The package credits Juergen Teller for its ballerina photograph and Margaret Morton for its doll photograph. Side B closes on a track printed as "Rock Star" since 1994; the band wrote it as "Olympia," and the distributor feed still carries both names.
