Vinyl LP, First Release Of The 1974 Score

The first official release of Popol Vuh's music for Werner Herzog's 1974 documentary The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner, issued on vinyl and digitally by the label Latency as LTNC040. Until this release the score could only be heard through fan-made recordings taken from the film. The LP pairs four Popol Vuh pieces with new variations on the main theme by james K, Lorenzo Senni and ML Buch.

Herzog's film follows Walter Steiner, the Swiss carpenter and woodcarver who became a two-time world champion in ski flying in the 1970s and was known as "the bird man." According to the release notes carried by Boomkat, the recordings were recovered from the archive and remastered. The opening "Dream of Flight" is a cue heard in Aguirre, the Wrath of God and its trailer that never appeared on that film's soundtrack album, and was used again for the Steiner film two years later. The main theme, "Steiner's Ecstasy," is a repeating piano improvisation by Florian Fricke, heard here in the version used in the film and in a studio take with added vocals.

The last three tracks are the variations, each built from "Steiner's Ecstasy." Boomkat's notes describe james K's version as granulated and tidal, Lorenzo Senni's as looped piano with a synth stab, and ML Buch's as processed vocals and echoes.
