Gatefold Vinyl LP With Poster

This UK edition of Affenstunde was issued by Esoteric Recordings, an imprint of Cherry Red Records, under catalog number ECLECLP2946 in July 2026. The label states that it was cut at AIR Studios in London. It comes in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork restored, and a poster is included. The Progressive Aspect's review notes that the poster shows the earliest incarnation of the group "framed by a vast blue sky," and that Esoteric recreated the original German credits on the sleeve.

Affenstunde, which translates as "Hour of the Monkey," was Popol Vuh's debut album, first released in 1970 on Liberty Records. It was recorded at Bavaria Music Studio in Munich and produced by Bettina Fricke and Gerhard Augustin. Florian Fricke played Moog synthesizer, Holger Trülzsch played percussion and Frank Fiedler handled the synthesizer mixdown. Bettina Fricke also designed the cover and played uncredited tablas.

Esoteric's notes describe the record as one of the earliest albums to use the Moog synthesizer as a compositional tool. Side one holds three parts of "Ich Mache Einen Spiegel," and side two is given over to the title piece, which runs more than 18 minutes. Julian Cope described it as "a debut album of incredible sounds and sensations that were unlike anything prior to its existence," and AllMusic's Thom Jurek called it "an auspicious debut, which holds up wonderfully in the 21st century." Popol Vuh followed it in 1971 with In den Gärten Pharaos.
