2004 4AD Reissue on 180-Gram Black Vinyl

This is the 2004 4AD reissue of Surfer Rosa, catalog number CAD 803: a single LP pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. It was part of a run of heavyweight reissues of the band's early catalog, issued alongside Come On Pilgrim and Doolittle. The pressing carries the full original artwork, with sleeve art direction and design by 23 Envelope and a thick printed inner sleeve. The labels keep the original 1988 4AD copyright.

Surfer Rosa is the Pixies' debut studio album. 4AD first issued it in the UK on March 21, 1988. Steve Albini engineered and produced it at Q Division in Boston over ten booked working days in December 1987. 4AD set a budget of $10,000, and the sessions cost about $18,000 in the end. Several of the album's textures came from that room: Kim Deal's vocals on "Where Is My Mind?" and "Gigantic" were recorded in the studio bathroom for its echo, and Black Francis sang "Something Against You" through a guitar amplifier. According to studio assistant Jon Lupfer, Albini set out to capture the studio chatter heard at the end of "Oh My Golly!" and at the start of "I'm Amazed".

The album spent 60 weeks on the UK Indie Chart and peaked at number 2. Its only single was a re-recorded "Gigantic", produced by Gil Norton, which reached number 93 on the UK Singles Chart. In the US the record was available only as an import until 4AD's distribution deal with Rough Trade later in 1988. The RIAA certified it gold in 2005, seventeen years after its first release. Simon Larbalestier, who supplied photographs for every Pixies album sleeve, built the set for the cover image himself.
