180 Gram Black Vinyl Reissue

This is 4AD's 180-gram reissue of Doolittle, catalog number CAD 905, a single black LP in a standard jacket that first appeared in this form in 2004. It keeps the original 1989 sleeve, with Vaughan Oliver of v23 credited for art direction and design and Simon Larbalestier for photography. The fifteen songs fall seven to side A and eight to side B, with "Debaser" opening the first side and "Mr. Grieves" the second.

Doolittle was the second studio album by Pixies, released by 4AD on April 17, 1989. Gil Norton produced and engineered it, with Steve Haigler as mixing engineer. Sessions began at Downtown Recorders in Boston on October 31, 1988, and mixing followed at Carriage House Studios in Stamford, Connecticut. Black Francis wrote every song except "Silver," which he wrote with Kim Deal.

The back cover credits Black Francis on vocals and guitar, Kim Deal on bass, Joey Santiago on lead guitar and backing vocals, and David Lovering on drums. Lovering sings lead on "La La Love You" and plays bass on "Silver," where Deal moves to slide guitar. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" brings in violinists Karen Karlsrud and Corine Metter and cellists Arthur Fiacco and Ann Rorich, the first guest musicians on a Pixies song.

The album reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart, and the British weeklies Melody Maker and Sounds each named it their album of the year. Both of its singles, "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man," reached the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Kurt Cobain listed Doolittle among his favorite records and said its songs fed into Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
