1979 Australian pressing, CBS S2BP 220216, two LPs
CBS issued The Wall in Australia in 1979 as S2BP 220216, with the American Columbia number PC2 36183 carried alongside it. On this version the labels print CBS Songs beneath the catalog number; a companion Australian issue has Penjane in that position instead.
The object
Two records in a gatefold sleeve, each in a printed inner sleeve carrying Roger Waters's lyrics. Record one is numbered C 36184 and SBP 237356 on its labels, record two C 36185 and SBP 237357, and the label matrices run from MX188428 on side A to MX188431 on side D.
The runouts are stamped with their matrix and SBP numbers, with smaller marks such as #1 and #2 etched by hand. Sides A, B and D also carry an R with a small circle above it, the mark of cutting engineer Otto Ruiter, and side D closes with TML-X.
Context
This set comes from the album's own year: The Wall and this Australian edition both date from 1979. Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour and Roger Waters produced the record, with James Guthrie as co-producer, and it was recorded at Super Bear Studios, Producers Workshop and CBS Studios in New York. Gerald Scarfe designed the sleeve with Waters.
