20th Anniversary Cassette, Clear Shell With Black Liner

Pimpalation arrives on tape for the first time with this 20th anniversary cassette, issued under catalog number RAL2K005-CA as part of Rap-A-Lot Records' 40th anniversary series and distributed by Virgin Music Group. The tape is housed in a clear shell with a black liner, and the J-card carries one panel beyond the standard fold. Its front reproduces the original cover art, the album's "The Pimp Is Free!" tagline and a Parental Advisory label.

The full 17-track program is divided across two sides. Side A opens with the intro and runs through "Working the Wheel," with that running order printed on the shell label itself; Side B picks up at "Bobby & Whitney" and closes on the "Outro." The album's 69:45 running time is split between the two.

Released in the summer of 2006 through Wood Wheel, Rap-A-Lot 4 Life and Asylum, Pimpalation sits between The Sweet James Jones Stories (2005) and The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones (2010) in Pimp C's solo catalog. It opened at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and went on to an RIAA gold certification. A chopped and screwed version of the album was mixed by DJ Michael "5000" Watts.

A few months ahead of the album, the DVD Pimpalation: Return of the Trill, an hour-long film shot and edited by REL, followed Pimp C from his release from prison on December 30, 2005, back into the studio and onto the stage. The "Knockin' Doorz Down" video, directed by Benny Mathews with a Godfather theme and cameos from Bun B, Mike Jones, Trae, Lil' Flip and J. Prince, was nominated for Best Video at the 2007 Ozone Magazine Awards. That single and "Pourin' Up" both charted just outside the Hot 100, at No. 108 and No. 103.
