Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This pressing belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Craft Recordings runs with Acoustic Sounds under the supervision of Acoustic Sounds CEO Chad Kassem. A World of Piano! was one of seven Contemporary titles the series issued in 2023, as part of Craft's 70th-anniversary celebration of the label. Bernie Grundman, who once worked for Contemporary himself, cut the lacquers from the original master tapes on an all-analog (AAA) chain. The record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and sleeved in an old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.

The center labels reproduce the black stereo Contemporary design of the early 1960s, a detail Mark Smotroff noted in his Audiophile Review write-up of this edition. Roy DuNann and Howard Holzer engineered the original recording, and Lester Koenig, who founded Contemporary in 1951, produced it.

Newborn cut the album in Los Angeles across two 1961 sessions, and Contemporary released it in June 1962. It was his first recording for the label and his first album as a leader in two years. Each side features its own trio: Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums for side 1, recorded October 16, and Sam Jones on bass with Louis Hayes on drums for side 2, recorded November 21. The program mixes five jazz standards with three lesser-known pieces by jazz composers, including Charlie Parker's "Cheryl," Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" and Clifford Brown's "Dahoud."

A Memphis native, Newborn started out in R&B as a sideman for B.B. King and Jackie Brenston and recorded at Sun Studios before turning to jazz and moving to New York, then Los Angeles. In Leonard Feather's original liner notes, Newborn explains that he opened Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" with part of Ravel's Sonatine because its harmonic structure resembles part of the song's.
