Four records in individual sleeves inside a rigid slipcase, with a twenty-page booklet whose notes Tom Doyle wrote around a new interview with Collins. The original album has been remastered at half speed at Abbey Road by Miles Showell and takes the first record; the other three hold live recordings, remixes, outtakes and demos.

Face Value arrived on February 13, 1981, the first record Collins made away from Genesis. It reached number one in the United Kingdom and held the position for three weeks, and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. It is certified five times platinum in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The drum sound on "In the Air Tonight" came out of a session for Peter Gabriel's third album, where engineer Hugh Padgham and producer Steve Lillywhite found it at Townhouse Studios by opening a heavily compressed and gated talkback microphone above Collins's kit. Collins carried the technique to his own record, which he produced with Padgham. He wrote the album around the end of his first marriage, and has said of the song's lyric: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."

The Phenix Horns, Earth, Wind & Fire's horn section, play on "Behind the Lines," "Hand in Hand" and "If Leaving Me Is Easy," with arrangements by Thomas "Tom Tom 84" Washington. The album closes on a cover of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows."

Four performances are new to any release: "This Must Be Love" from Irvine Meadows in 1985, "You Know What I Mean" from Perkins Palace in 1982, an outtake of "Tomorrow Never Knows," and the full version of "Over the Rainbow," which appears on the original album only as a closing fragment. Side E opens with two stripped-back readings from The Secret Policeman's Other Ball at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in September 1981, with guitarist Daryl Stuermer.
