This is the black-vinyl issue of Gabriel's third album from the November 2024 reissues: a single 180-gram LP with the sleeve artwork and inner bag as on the original release, and a download card offering 24-bit/96kHz or 16-bit/44.1kHz files.
Steve Lillywhite produced the album and Hugh Padgham engineered it. Gabriel asked the drummers to leave out cymbals, and "Intruder" is cited as the first prominent use of the gated reverb drum sound that Lillywhite, Padgham and Phil Collins arrived at in response. Paul Weller plays guitar on "And Through the Wire," and Kate Bush and David Rhodes also appear.
Released May 30, 1980, it reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 22 on the Billboard 200, and "Games Without Frontiers," the video above, was a UK top-five single. The closing song, "Biko," was his first overtly political song.
Hipgnosis built the cover from Polaroid SX-70 pictures of Gabriel that were smeared while they developed, which is where the name Melt comes from.
