Numbered Limited Edition 2LP, Half-Speed Remastered and Cut at 45 RPM on 180 Gram Vinyl

Long Walk Home first reached vinyl on July 28, 2017, when Real World Records issued it as this numbered, limited double LP. Its fifteen pieces are spread over four sides of 180-gram vinyl, cut at 45 RPM from a half-speed remaster. Matt Colton cut the lacquers at Alchemy Mastering, Tony Cousins handled mastering at Metropolis, and Richard Chappell, Gabriel's main sound engineer, oversaw the process.

The gatefold sleeve pairs the dot-painting front cover with photography from the film and artwork carried over from the original CD. The records come in printed inner bags, with a card for a hi-res download. This edition arrived the same day as matching half-speed vinyl editions of Birdy and Passion, Gabriel's other two soundtrack albums; Birdy shares this two-LP layout, while Passion runs to three.

Gabriel wrote the music for Phillip Noyce's 2002 film Rabbit-Proof Fence, which follows three Aboriginal girls taken from their families as they trace the fence back to their community at Jigalong. The album grew out of two years of work with Noyce, and Gabriel has said the film's sparse dialogue left an open canvas with room for atmosphere. He made it with longtime collaborators David Rhodes, Richard Evans and Shankar, with Manu Katché, The Blind Boys of Alabama, the Dhol Foundation and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan among the contributors.

Several pieces share material with Up, the studio album Gabriel released later in 2002: "Ngankarrparni" and "Cloudless" rework "Sky Blue," and "Running to the Rain," "Crossing the Salt Pan" and "The Return" rework "Signal to Noise." "Cloudless," produced by Gabriel with Stephen Hague, was issued as a single. Uncut gave this vinyl reissue 8/10 as a Reissue of the Month, and Long Live Vinyl rated it 9/10.
