Black Vinyl 2LP

Two black LPs in the LaFace Records pressing, running twenty-four tracks across four sides. The back of the sleeve groups them as Vinyl One, sides A and B, and Vinyl Two, sides C and D, under the catalog number the album has carried since 2000, 73008-26072-1. Sealed copies arrive with the original hype sticker, which names "B.O.B." and "Ms. Jackson" and calls this the stankiest album of their career, beside a Parental Advisory mark.

Released on October 31, 2000 by LaFace Records and Arista Records, this was the duo's fourth album. Big Boi and Andre 3000 cut it between 1999 and 2000, mostly at Stankonia Recording, the Atlanta facility they had bought the year before, with further work at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta and A&M Studios in Los Angeles. Andre 3000 had named that studio by joining "stank," a slang synonym for funky, to "Plutonia," the title of a poster in his bedroom showing a futuristic city, and the record took its name from the room it was made in.

Production came from Earthtone III, a team of the duo with Mr. DJ, and from Organized Noize. The sleeve credits album production to Earthtone III, Organized Noize Productions, Inc. and Antonio "LA" Reid, with Michael "Blue" Williams as associate album producer. Guests across the four sides include Khujo Goodie, Big Gipp, T-Mo Goodie and Cee-Lo Goodie of Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, B-Real, Erykah Badu, Gangsta Boo, Slimm Calhoun, Big Rube and Sleepy Brown.

Stankonia entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2. Three singles supported it: "B.O.B.," the video above, then "Ms. Jackson," the first OutKast single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "So Fresh, So Clean." At the 44th Annual Grammy Awards the duo won Best Rap Album for the record and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Ms. Jackson." Rolling Stone placed it at No. 64 in the 2020 revision of its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
