Rhino Reserve 180 Gram Mono LP

This edition of The Soul Album belongs to Rhino Reserve, Rhino's audiophile vinyl series. Matthew Lutthans cut the lacquers at The Mastering Lab from the original analog mono masters, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing in California. A sticker on the front cover marks the album's 60th anniversary, the jacket keeps the Volt logo, and the label catalog number is RES1 413.

Volt first issued The Soul Album in April 1966. It spent 28 weeks on the US R&B albums chart, peaking at No. 3, and reached No. 54 on Billboard's LP chart. Redding is backed by the Stax house band: Booker T. Jones and Isaac Hayes on keyboards, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald Dunn on bass and Al Jackson Jr. on drums, with a horn section that includes Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love and Floyd Newman. Cropper also co-wrote three of the songs.

Alongside Redding's own songs, the album reworks material by Sam Cooke ("Chain Gang"), Smokey Robinson ("It's Growing"), Roy Head ("Treat Her Right") and Eddie Floyd ("Everybody Makes a Mistake"). "Cigarettes and Coffee" was written by Jerry Butler and first recorded by Al "TNT" Braggs in 1961; Cropper has called it one of Redding's hidden gems in an interview with Songfacts. "Just One More Day," written by Redding, Cropper and McEvoy Robinson, came out as a single in November 1965, ahead of the album. Loring Eutemey of Atlantic Records designed the cover, a portrait of the model Fleurette Carter.
