Rhino Reserve Mono Pressing on 180g Black Vinyl

This is the Rhino Reserve edition of Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul, issued June 27, 2025 in the album's original mono mix. Chris Bellman cut the lacquers from the original analog mono masters at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California, with plating by Record Technology Incorporated. The front of the jacket carries the series catalog number RES1 412.

Rhino Reserve titles are sold direct through Rhino's own online store, and this one arrived as part of the label's Black Music Month installment alongside reissues from Baby Huey and the Meters. Tracking Angle's review notes that the jacket is not paper-on-cardboard, which is how Rhino prices the series below its High Fidelity line.

In the mono configuration, "I've Been Loving You Too Long" is the April 1965 recording. The rest of the album was made at Stax in Memphis over two sessions on July 9 and 10, 1965, roughly 22 hours of studio time, with Booker T. & the M.G.'s as the band, Isaac Hayes on piano and horns drawn from the Mar-Keys and the Memphis Horns.

Otis Blue was Redding's third studio album, first issued by Volt, the Stax subsidiary, on September 15, 1965. Redding wrote three of its eleven songs, and three more came from Sam Cooke, who had died several months before the sessions. It became Redding's first album to top the US R&B LPs chart and reached No. 6 in the UK. Three of its singles were top 40 hits: the Redding original "I've Been Loving You Too Long", a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction", and "Respect", which Aretha Franklin rearranged in 1967 for her breakout hit. The 1965 Volt recording of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011.
