Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, a reissue program run jointly by Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds. The series began in the spring of 2022, and this album was one of seven titles added to it in 2023. Bernie Grundman, who once worked for Contemporary himself, cut the lacquers with all-analog mastering from the original tapes. It is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in an old-style tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton.

The jacket follows the 1959 Contemporary original, with catalog number CR00596 on the front. The back carries Nat Hentoff's liner notes from September 1959 and the original session details.

Tomorrow Is the Question!, subtitled The New Music of Ornette Coleman!, was Coleman's second album. Contemporary released it in 1959, and it was his last album for the label before he moved to Atlantic. Lester Koenig produced it, and Roy DuNann engineered it at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles. Craft's own notes call it an "emphatic, pianoless" record. Coleman plays alto saxophone and wrote every piece. Don Cherry is on trumpet and Shelly Manne on drums.

The two sides come from different sessions with different bassists. Percy Heath plays on Side 1, which was recorded in a single session on the night of March 9 to 10, 1959. Red Mitchell plays on Side 2: "Lorraine" was recorded on January 16, and "Turnaround" and "Endless" on February 23. The album generally received better press than Coleman's debut, Something Else!!!!. AllMusic's Thom Jurek heard the tunes as "knottier and tighter in their arrangement style" than those of the first record.
