Reprise issues Second Song on CD in a card softpack rather than a jewel case. The disc face prints the running order and the SOURCE mark, which states that the album was mastered from original analog tapes except where a title carries an asterisk. Two of the seven do: "Earth Girl" and "I'll Love You Forever" are marked as 192/24 digital. The disc is manufactured in Germany and carries the UPC 093624820215 on its face.

The album was recorded at Shangri-La in Malibu and produced by Lou Adler with the Volume Dealers, the production name Neil Young shares with Niko Bolas. Anthony LoGerfo and Manny Adler are credited as associate producers, and John Hanlon engineered and mixed. All seven songs are Young's: five are previously unreleased, and two — "Casting Me Away From You" and "I Will Love You Forever" — are unreleased versions of songs already in his catalog.

Young's own store places the record near Comes A Time and Prairie Wind and describes it as "a new way of viewing the past, the present and the future." The title track went out ahead of the album, as a single on August 7, 2026; its official lyric video is above.
