Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Series 180g 2LP in Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is Blue Note's Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Series edition of After Midnight: The Complete Sessions, issued to mark the album's 70th anniversary. Joe Harley produced it for release, Kevin Gray mastered it from the original analog phono reels, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180g vinyl. eCoustics lists the cut as mono. The two discs sit in a gatefold tip-on jacket with a booklet of rare archival photos and an essay by Will Friedwald, author of the Cole biography Straighten Up And Fly Right.

Across four sides it gathers all 18 performances from the four sessions Cole recorded at Capitol Studios in August and September 1956. That means the 12 songs of the original Capitol LP (W-782), the five further titles first issued as bonus tracks on Capitol's 1987 CD The Complete After Midnight Sessions, and an alternate take of "You're Looking At Me" that closes side four.

Cole sings and plays piano in front of his trio of John Collins on guitar, Charlie Harris on bass and Lee Young on drums. Each song adds one guest soloist from a rotating group: Willie Smith on alto saxophone, Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Stuff Smith on violin, or Juan Tizol on trombone, with bongos joining on "Caravan" and "Lonely One." In his booklet essay, Friedwald writes that Cole deliberately set these album sessions apart from his earlier Trio singles.

On its first release on Capitol, After Midnight reached No. 13 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. The Penguin Guide to Jazz lists it in its suggested core collection.
