Muddy Waters played the Newport Jazz Festival on Sunday, July 3, 1960, and Chess released the recording that November as LPS-1449. The set runs a little over half an hour and it is the record that carried Chicago electric blues to an audience that had come for jazz.

The band is the one he was touring with: Otis Spann on piano, Pat Hare on guitar, Andrew Stevens on bass, Francis Clay on drums and James Cotton on harmonica. Most of the program is drawn from the Chess singles catalog, including "I'm Your Hoochie Koochie Man," "Baby, Please Don't Go" and "Got My Mojo Working," which runs across two parts as the crowd pulls it back for a second pass. The closing number, "Goodbye Newport Blues," is a Langston Hughes lyric.

This pressing is part of the Chess Records Acoustic Sounds Series, remastered from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. The tip-on gatefold jacket is printed on high-grade board and opens onto two period photographs of Waters at the microphone. Catalog number ACHE 44082.
