Grey Vinyl 2LP In A Gatefold Sleeve

Chemikal Underground's 2026 pressing of Come On Die Young spreads the album across two grey vinyl LPs, catalog number CHEM263G, housed in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork and packaged with a digital download code. The label's previous reissue of the album, in 2023, was pressed on white vinyl.

Come On Die Young is Mogwai's second album, released by Chemikal Underground on March 29, 1999, two years after Mogwai Young Team. The band recorded it in three weeks with Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York, and it is the first Mogwai record to feature Barry Burns on piano, keyboards, guitar and flute. The band set out for a sparser sound, with The Cure's Seventeen Seconds, Slint's Spiderland, Low and Nick Drake among the reference points, and the running time grew after Chemikal Underground asked them to include more of what they had recorded.

The title comes from a Glasgow gang of the same name, and the cover shows bassist Dominic Aitchison's face, inspired by Captain Howdy in The Exorcist. The opening "Punk Rock:" is built around Iggy Pop speaking in a 1977 CBC interview with Peter Gzowski. "Cody" carries relatively prominent vocals and Richard Formby on lap steel; Luke Sutherland adds violin elsewhere, and Wayne Myers plays trombone on the closing track. The first version of "Helps Both Ways" carried John Madden's commentary from the NFC Championship game of January 1998, which was used without permission and replaced with other football commentary.

The album reached No. 29 on the UK Albums Chart, No. 6 on the UK Independent Albums Chart and No. 24 in Scotland. NME scored it 8 out of 10 on release, and Pitchfork gave the 2014 deluxe edition 8.3 out of 10, while AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that it might not have "seemed as disappointing if it hadn't arrived on the wave of hype and expectation."
