180 Gram Black Vinyl 2LP

Glacial Pace's double-LP edition of the Modest Mouse debut, pressed on 180-gram black vinyl and packaged with printed inner sleeves. Glacial Pace is frontman Isaac Brock's own label, and its 2014 reissue brought the album back to vinyl for the first time in more than ten years. The record is spread across four sides and runs 18 tracks, two more than the CD: "Edit the Sad Parts" and "A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy" are vinyl-only and close side D, stretching the running time from about 74 minutes to 86.

This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About first appeared on Up Records on April 16, 1996, as the band's first full-length album. Isaac Brock (guitar, vocals), Jeremiah Green (drums) and Eric Judy (bass) made it with producer Steve Wold, who also played slide guitar and mandolin. Brent Arnold added cello, Nicole Johnson sings on "Custom Concern," "She Ionizes & Atomizes" and "Head South," and Calvin Johnson joins on "Head South" as well. On "Dog Paddle" the trio trade places, with Brock on drums, Green on bass and Judy on guitar. Scott Swayze and Wold engineered at Moon Studios in Olympia, Washington, and Brock supplied the photography.

Glacial Pace's own notes describe a record that extends the emotional and geographic isolation of the band's early recordings, moving between slow, brooding numbers and thrashing guitar workouts. Many of the lyrics follow long hours in a car and the loneliness of rural life. Reviewing it for Pitchfork, Ryan Schreiber heard the influence of Pixies and Jane's Addiction. The Interstate 8 EP followed later in 1996, and The Lonesome Crowded West arrived in 1997; Glacial Pace reissued that album alongside this one in 2014.
