Black Vinyl 2LP Reissue In Two Single Jackets

This is Glacial Pace's double-vinyl reissue of The Lonesome Crowded West, catalog number GPLP009. Isaac Brock's label first issued it in 2014, alongside a reissue of the band's 1996 debut, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About. It keeps the shape of the original Up Records double LP: the two black discs come in two separate single jackets, each with its own artwork, rather than a gatefold or one shared sleeve.

The vinyl running order is not the CD's. It carries sixteen songs to the CD's fifteen. Baby Blue Sedan, which the CD leaves off, closes side A, and Lounge (Closing Time) moves from fourth place on the CD to the second-to-last slot on side D, just ahead of Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice on Ice, Alright.

The Lonesome Crowded West is Modest Mouse's second studio album, released by Up Records on November 18, 1997. Calvin Johnson produced it with Brock and Scott Swayze, who also engineered it. Most of it was recorded at Moon Music, while Phil Ek recorded Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Doin' the Cockroach and Cowboy Dan at two other studios. The trio of Brock on guitars and vocals, Jeremiah Green on drums and Eric Judy on bass is joined by Tyler Reilly on fiddle for Jesus Christ Was an Only Child and by DJ K.O., whose turntable work runs through Heart Cooks Brain. The two towers on the front cover are The Westin Seattle.

Pitchfork placed the album 29th on its list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1990s, and in June 2012 Pitchfork.tv released a 45-minute documentary about it. Spin ranked it 59th among the best albums of 1985 to 2005, and The A.V. Club has called it the band's breakthrough. Nielsen SoundScan counted more than 60,000 copies sold in the US by June 2000. In 2026, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie called it the greatest Northwest record ever made.
