180-Gram Black Vinyl LP With Digital Download

This is Glacial Pace's 2015 reissue of Building Nothing Out Of Something: a single 180-gram black LP, catalog number GPLP010, with a digital download included. Glacial Pace is Isaac Brock's own label. Music Direct's notes place this repress just after Strangers To Ourselves, the band's first studio album in eight years, in the same run of vinyl reissues that brought back the Interstate 8 EP.

The jacket ships inside a translucent outer sleeve printed with drafting diagrams that line up over the full-color cover art. The record labels are plain white with all twelve titles printed in running order, and the white back cover carries the barcode above a blue geometric drawing.

Up Records first issued the compilation on January 18, 2000. According to Music Direct, that first vinyl pressing had been out of print for more than a decade by the time Glacial Pace brought it back.

The twelve songs are singles, B-sides and rarities recorded between 1995 and 1998 by Isaac Brock, Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green. "Never Ending Math Equation" was the A-side of a 1998 Sub Pop single, with "Workin' On Leavin' The Livin'" on its flip. Three songs come from the Interstate 8 EP, and "Baby Blue Sedan" had previously appeared only on the vinyl edition of The Lonesome Crowded West. "Sleepwalking" borrows the melody of "Sleep Walk," the 1959 instrumental by Santo and Johnny. Calvin Johnson, Phil Ek and Steve Wold are among the producers and engineers credited, and Nicole Johnson sings on three tracks.

Pitchfork's Brent DiCrescenzo scored the original release 8.9 out of 10, suggesting it could be the best Modest Mouse record for newcomers.
