180 Gram Black Vinyl LP, 2015 Columbia & Legacy Reissue

This is the 2015 Columbia/Legacy vinyl reissue of Miles Davis's 1969 album, catalog number 88875111941: a single 180-gram black LP, made in the EU and issued for the European market, which is why it reaches us as an import. Discogs files it in Legacy's vinyl reissue series, and the sleeve carries a dual copyright line, 1969 and 2015, for Columbia Records. As on the original LP, each side holds one long, continuous piece: "Shhh / Peaceful" on side A and "In a Silent Way / It's About That Time" on side B.

Teo Macero produced the album, assembling it from takes cut in a single three-hour session on February 18, 1969, in Studio B at CBS 30th Street Studio in Manhattan, then editing them with Davis into the two side-long works. The band around Davis was Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Dave Holland and Tony Williams. McLaughlin had been in the United States for less than two weeks when Davis asked him to the date. The title piece is a Zawinul composition, named at Nat Adderley's suggestion; Davis stripped its chord changes back to a plainer melody built over a pedal point.

The record opens Davis's electric period, and music writers have described it as his first fusion recording. It reached No. 134 on the Billboard Top LPs chart, his first album to chart since My Funny Valentine in 1965, and it was nominated for the 1970 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. The Penguin Guide to Jazz lists it in its Core Collection.
