1982 US pressing, Heartbeat HB 09, pressed by Wakefield and cut at Frankford/Wayne
S.W.A.L.K. was issued in the UK in 1982 on Mikey Dread's own Dread At The Controls label as RIDE 10, and in the US the same year on Heartbeat as HB 09. This is that American issue, pressed by Wakefield Manufacturing from lacquers cut at Frankford/Wayne Mastering Labs.
The object
Both sides of the deadwax carry a stamped Wakefield W-over-M logo and the job number 40646, with the etched initials DC and the mark FW/NY. DC is Dave Crawford, who cut the lacquers, and FW/NY is Frankford/Wayne's New York stamp. Side A adds ROU-HB-09-A-1 and side B adds HB0-9-B. The labels are red with the black Heartbeat script and heart, give the catalog number as 09 with (40646) beneath it, and carry a 1982 Dread at the Controls phonographic line. On the back cover the two sides are titled Reel #1 and Reel #2, the title track is spelled SWALK rather than S.W.A.L.K., and Mikey Dread's liner notes sit alongside hand lettering by Kate Dineen. Jean-Bernard Sohiez took the photographs.
Context
The Heartbeat edition shares its 1982 date with the UK original. Mikey Dread, named on the labels as Michael Campbell, produced the album and is the sole credited writer on seven of its eight songs; the opener, Rocky Road, shares its credit between Campbell and three other writers.
