Black Vinyl 2LP in a Widespine Jacket

This edition of Operation: Doomsday comes from Rhymesayers Entertainment in partnership with Metal Face Records, catalog number RSE0352-1. Two black LPs sit in a widespine jacket with printed labels and dust sleeves, and the back cover keeps the original "Side Zero" through "Side Three" sequencing.

Released on Fondle 'Em Records in October 1999, this was Daniel Dumile's first solo album and the first under the MF DOOM name, after his years as Zev Love X in KMD. The death of his brother and bandmate DJ Subroc and the shelving of KMD's Black Bastards by Elektra preceded his return in a metal mask.

DOOM produced the record himself, much of it over about three weeks at DJ Stretch Armstrong's apartment on borrowed Akai MPC2000 and MPC3000 machines. The beats pair 1980s soul and smooth-jazz loops with vintage drum breaks, and skits built from the 1967 Fantastic Four cartoon frame the story around Doctor Doom.

Pitchfork's Ian Cohen gave it 8.9 and called it DOOM's "warmest and most benevolent work." Fact ranked it No. 6 among its 100 best indie hip-hop records, and in recent years it reached No. 109 on the Billboard 200 and No. 17 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
