Verve Vault Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Verve Vault Series edition of Mel Tormé's 1960 Broadway set, part of a Verve Label Group and UMe program that returns catalog titles to vinyl from their original analog tapes. Ryan K. Smith cut it at Sterling Sound in an all-analog chain, and it is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Optimal in Germany. The packaging follows the original LP: a single sleeve with the 1960 Verve artwork and the stereo catalog number MG VS-6146 on its face. Series LPs carry a sticker marking Verve's 70th anniversary.

Tormé made the record for Verve with arrangements by Marty Paich, and Russell Garcia produced. The band included Art Pepper on alto saxophone, Bill Perkins on tenor, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Vincent DeRosa on French horn and Red Callender on tuba. Paich played piano, with Joe Mondragon on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. Val Valentin engineered the session.

Every song comes from the Broadway stage, including numbers from My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Bells Are Ringing, Damn Yankees and Oklahoma. Cole Porter's "Too Darn Hot," from the 1948 musical Kiss Me, Kate, sits near the end of side B. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings names the album in its suggested core collection.

Norman Granz signed Tormé to Verve in 1958. In his run of albums for the label, this one followed Back in Town, made with the Mel-Tones, and came before Swingin' on the Moon.
