This is the Back On Black vinyl edition of Mayhem's first studio album, catalog number BOBV048LP, a UK release. The label has pressed it more than once under this barcode, and the vinyl color varies between runs, so the record in the jacket may be black or colored.
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was recorded at Grieg Hall in Bergen between 1992 and 1993, produced by Pytten with the band's Euronymous and Hellhammer, and first issued in 1994 by Deathlike Silence. Songwriting reached back to 1987, and several of the songs had already been played live by 1990. Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar sang on the sessions. The album was delayed by the deaths of vocalist Per "Dead" Ohlin in 1991 and Euronymous in 1993, and it holds the last lyrics Dead wrote and the last recordings Euronymous made.
The cover is a monochrome photograph of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. In 2017 Rolling Stone placed the album 40th on its list of the 100 greatest metal albums, and a reissue run took it to No. 35 in Norway and No. 60 in Germany in 2020. "Freezing Moon," shown above in a 2024 festival performance, is the album's second track.
