Japanese SHM-CD With Three Bonus Tracks

This is the Japanese SHM-CD pressing of The Golden Age of Grotesque, issued in March 2013 under Interscope as UICY-25383 and carrying the Japanese obi strip. Three bonus tracks follow the fifteen-track album: "Tainted Love," "Baboon Rape Party" and "Paranoiac."

The album itself is Marilyn Manson's fifth, released on May 13, 2003 by Nothing and Interscope. It was recorded across 2002 and 2003 and produced by Manson with Tim Sköld, with co-production from Ben Grosse. Sköld, formerly of KMFDM, had joined after bassist Twiggy Ramirez left the group over creative differences; it is also the last Manson studio album to feature keyboardist Madonna Wayne Gacy and guitarist John 5, both of whom left before the following record.

The sound steps away from the metal of the earlier albums toward something more electronic and beat-driven, a move the band framed at the time as avoiding the hip-hop-inflected nu metal then dominant. The lyrics draw on the swing, burlesque, cabaret and vaudeville of Weimar-era Germany, 1920s Berlin in particular; Manson has credited Dita Von Teese with leading him to that material, and much of the album artwork takes after illustrations in Mel Gordon's 2000 book Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin.

It entered the Billboard 200 at number one and topped national charts in Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In Japan it reached number five and was certified gold for sales above 100,000 copies. "mOBSCENE," the video above, reached number 18 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
