Midnight Purple Vinyl, 2LP, Gatefold, 25th Anniversary Edition

Glitter returns to vinyl for the first time since its original release, cut across two midnight purple LPs in a gatefold jacket. Virgin issued the album on cassette, CD and vinyl in 2001, and no vinyl edition followed it. This is the standard retail colorway for the twenty-fifth anniversary, on UMe.

Glitter is the eighth Mariah Carey studio album and the soundtrack to the 2001 film of the same name. It was recorded between November 2000 and March 2001 and built on the post-disco sound of 1983, the year the film is set. Carey produced it with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and with DJ Clue; Rick James wrote "All My Life," and Ludacris, Da Brat, Shawnna, Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, Ja Rule, Nate Dogg, Mystikal, Eric Benét and Cameo all appear across the record. Two of the twelve tracks are covers: "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" was a 1982 single for Indeep, and "Didn't Mean to Turn You On" was Cherrelle's 1984 debut single, written and produced by Jam and Lewis.

Virgin moved the US release from August 21 to September 11, 2001; Sony Music had already issued the album in Japan on August 18. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number seven, Carey's lowest first-week total to that point and her lowest-peaking album in the United States, and it spent twelve weeks on the chart before the RIAA certified it platinum for a million US shipments. It reached number one in Greece, Japan and South Korea and had sold more than two million copies worldwide by 2002. "Loverboy" was the lead single and peaked at number two on the Hot 100. Virgin dropped Carey and bought out her contract soon afterward.

In November 2018, seventeen years on, Glitter reached number one on the US iTunes album chart under the hashtag #JusticeForGlitter. The campaign grew out of a listening calendar a fan posted to Twitter in the run-up to Carey's album Caution; Glitter's day on it was November 9, and because the record was not on streaming services at the time, taking part meant buying it. Carey put Glitter on streaming on May 22, 2020 and said the move was in appreciation of the campaign. Billboard revisited the album at twenty in 2021, and PopMatters has called it one of the best dance-pop albums of the last twenty years.
