Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Mono LP in Tip-On Jacket with Obi

This is the Craft Recordings edition of Mal/2 in the relaunched Original Jazz Classics Series, catalog number CR00616. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original analog master tapes at Cohearent Audio, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA), and the mono LP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. It comes in a tip-on jacket that reproduces the original Prestige artwork, wrapped in an obi strip printed with the session personnel, a review excerpt and the mastering credits. Positive Feedback's review notes that the record ships in a Craft-branded rice-paper inner sleeve.

Fantasy Records launched Original Jazz Classics in 1982 to keep its Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary, Pablo and related catalogs in print, and the line issued more than 850 albums over three decades. Craft revived the name in 2023 with a focus on vinyl and hi-res audio. Mal/2 arrived on July 28, 2023, in the series' second batch, alongside two Bill Evans Trio titles and Yusef Lateef's Eastern Sounds.

Waldron recorded Mal/2 for Prestige over two sessions, on April 19 and May 17, 1957, with Rudy Van Gelder engineering in Hackensack, New Jersey, and Bob Weinstock supervising. It followed his debut, Mal-1, by a matter of months, and Prestige issued it in November 1957. Two rotating lineups share the record around a core of Waldron on piano, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone and Julian Euell on bass. Idrees Sulieman, Sahib Shihab and Ed Thigpen join them on "From This Moment On," "The Way You Look Tonight" and "One By One"; Bill Hardman, Jackie McLean and Art Taylor fill out "J.M.'s Dream Doll," "Don't Explain" and "Potpourri." Craft's announcement points out that Coltrane had only recently cut his own debut as a leader.

The program divides evenly between standards and Waldron originals: Cole Porter's "From This Moment On," Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern's "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Don't Explain," by Arthur Herzog Jr. and Billie Holiday, set against three Waldron compositions. Ira Gitler's liner notes, reproduced on the back jacket, describe "J.M.'s Dream Doll" as a waltz dedicated to Jackie McLean and his wife Dolly. They also record that Waldron spent most of 1957 as Holiday's accompanist, and that this "Don't Explain" was taped before he joined her.

AllMusic's Stephen Cook called the album "a cut above" many hard bop dates of its era, and the obi excerpts a three-and-a-half-star DownBeat review by Don Gold. This Craft reissue reached No. 11 on the UK's Official Jazz & Blues Albums Chart in August 2023.

The reproduced back jacket prints a side order that places "Don't Explain" on side A and "J.M.'s Dream Doll" on side B. The disc labels and Craft's own listing have them the other way round, and the tracklist below follows the labels.
