Luscious Jackson - Natural Ingredients (Black Vinyl)

This is the 2026 black vinyl reissue of Natural Ingredients, the first full-length album by Luscious Jackson. It is a single LP with the album's twelve songs in their original order, six to a side, from "Citysong" at the start of Side One to "LP Retreat" at the end of Side Two. The original 1994 CD also carried two short interludes, "Intro" and "Intermission"; the label's listing for this LP does not name them. It is a separate edition from the 2025 thirtieth-anniversary vinyl, which came with a bonus 7-inch.

Luscious Jackson formed in Manhattan in 1991 around Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser, with Vivian Trimble on keyboards and Kate Schellenbach, a former member of the Beastie Boys, on drums. The Beastie Boys asked them to be the first band on their Grand Royal label, which issued the debut EP In Search of Manny in 1992.

The album was made in 1993 and 1994 at co-producer Tony Mangurian's small studio at Sixth Avenue and Spring Street in SoHo. Cunniff, Glaser and Mangurian produced it as the Superfreaks, and Schellenbach co-produced "Strongman." In the band's own account, some songs were built from samples in Logic and on sequencers while others were written on guitar and recorded straight, and Robert Aaron, who had played with Chic in the 1970s, added saxophone, flute and keyboards to several tracks. Every song is credited to Cunniff and Glaser except "Surprise," which Cunniff wrote alone.

Grand Royal and Capitol released Natural Ingredients on August 23, 1994. It reached number 114 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The lead single, "Citysong," samples "On and On" by Gladys Knight & the Pips; it reached number 39 on the Modern Rock chart, its video was directed by Tamra Davis, and the band played it on Saturday Night Live in January 1995. "Here" was later featured in the film Clueless (1995). After the album came out, the band toured on Lollapalooza.
