1974 US pressing, RCA Victor APL1-0472, Indianapolis, gatefold jacket
RCA issued Rock N Roll Animal in February 1974, and this copy was pressed at the company's Indianapolis plant. It is the gatefold edition; APL1-0472 was also issued in a single-pocket jacket.
The object
The labels are orange RCA Victor with the Dynaflex logo, and the disc is Dynaflex vinyl. The runouts are stamped with the side's APL1-0472 matrix and a lacquer number. On side A a serifed I follows, which together with the one-inch pressing ring marks the Indianapolis plant.
The spine carries the price code 0598. Inside the gatefold is an excerpt from the lyrics to "Heroin." RCA issued the record in a company inner sleeve explaining the Dynaflex process.
Context
Both the pressing and the album belong to 1974. The record comes from Lou Reed's concert at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York on December 21, 1973, taped by the Record Plant's mobile unit. Reed produced it with Steve Katz; Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter play guitar, and Hunter wrote the instrumental introduction that opens "Sweet Jane."
