The compact disc edition of Angel holds all 14 songs on a single disc. Lizzy McAlpine's own store sells it next to a cassette and the Looking Glass, Peach and Hummingbird vinyl editions.

McAlpine has described the album as "a journal entry from 2024-2026," explaining: "I use music and art as a way to process the world around me." It took nearly two years to make, in and around Los Angeles, with Mason Stoops and Taylor Mackall sharing production with her.

"The light in the painting" was the first song she wrote for it. She has said the song is "about the euphoric beginning of a new connection" and that it "feels like the perfect introduction to the world we've built for Angel." Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes sings on "Soldier of the road."

"Over country," heard above, arrived as a music video alongside the album, directed by McAlpine with Neema Sadeghi. The cover is a painting by the artist tidy.totes, and Angel is her first album whose cover does not show her.

McAlpine made her Broadway debut in 2025 in Floyd Collins at Lincoln Center Theater, a performance The New York Times called "a vocal wow of a Broadway debut."
