Chess 75 Series Mono 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP is part of the Chess Records 75th Anniversary Series, an audiophile reissue program Chess runs with Acoustic Sounds. Matthew Lutthans remastered the original analog tapes in mono at The Mastering Lab at Blue Heaven Studios and cut the lacquers there. The disc is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed on high-grade board.

The front of the jacket keeps Don Bronstein's black-and-white portrait of Walter cupping his harmonica, under the original CHESS LP 1428 masthead, and the package carries the original liner notes by Chicago historian Studs Terkel. The reissue's label copy dates the first release to 1958. It was his first LP and the only album issued in his lifetime, and it appeared first as Checker LP-1428, that subsidiary's debut long-player, before Chess issued it under the same number.

Ten of its twelve songs reached the Billboard R&B Top 10 between 1952 and 1955; the other two were B-sides. "Juke," the first completed take at his first session as a leader on May 12, 1952, held No. 1 for eight weeks and is still the only harmonica instrumental to top that chart. "My Babe," a Willie Dixon song cut on January 25, 1955, gave him a second No. 1, while "Sad Hours" climbed to No. 2 and "Off the Wall" to No. 8.

The Blues Hall of Fame inducted the album in 1991, and Rolling Stone placed it at No. 198 on its 2010 list of the 500 greatest albums. Walter entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, the first artist inducted there specifically as a harmonica player.
