Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series 140g Black Vinyl LP

This UPC is The Sidewinder in Blue Note's Essential Vinyl Series: a single 12-inch LP pressed on 140-gram black vinyl, mastered from hi-resolution digital masters and housed in a single sleeve. It is not the label's Classic Vinyl Series edition of the album, which is cut all-analog by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal. The program is the original stereo LP, five tracks across two sides, with no bonus material.

Lee Morgan cut the session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on December 21, 1963, with Alfred Lion producing. Blue Note frames it as his comeback as a leader after a spell away from the scene, and Morgan wrote all five tunes for a quintet of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins. The album first appeared in 1964 as BLP 4157 in mono and BST 84157 in stereo.

The 24-bar title track turned into a crossover hit. Edited onto both sides of a 45 (BN 1911), it entered the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1964 and peaked at No. 81, and the album climbed to No. 25 on the Billboard pop LP chart and into the R&B Top Ten. Producer Michael Cuscuna recalled that the label's first run of 4,000 copies sold out in three or four days, and The Sidewinder went on to become Blue Note's best-selling record. Morgan said the name came from the "bad guy" on television rather than the snake. Chrysler used the recording in a 1965 World Series television ad without his permission, and agreed not to run it again after he threatened to sue.

Side B holds the three shorter pieces, among them "Boy, What a Night," which Blue Note describes as a 3/4-time number with band chatter in the background. The Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry in 2024.
