Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series 140-Gram LP

This is Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue in Blue Note's Essential Vinyl Series, the label's line of core catalog titles; the sticker on the jacket reads "Essential Titles - Great Price." Blue Note's product notes state that Essential titles are mastered from high-resolution digital masters and pressed on 140-gram vinyl. The single sleeve carries Reid Miles's original design, Francis Wolff's cover photograph and the stereo catalog number 84123, and the reissue's own catalog number is 5796684. The seven tracks keep the original running order, four on side A and three on side B.

The session dates to January 8, 1963, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. Burrell led a quintet of Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Major Holley Jr. on bass, Bill English on drums and Ray Barretto on congas. "Soul Lament" is Burrell alone on guitar, and Turrentine also sits out the title track and "Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You." Burrell wrote everything except "Mule," co-written with Holley, and "Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You," by Andy Razaf and Don Redman.

Midnight Blue came out in early May 1963, seven years after Burrell's debut as a leader on Introducing Kenny Burrell; uDiscover Music counts fifteen albums in between, six of them for Blue Note. Billboard listed it among the "new action LPs" on its jazz chart of May 11, 1963. NPR placed it in its Basic Jazz Library in 2005, and AllMusic's Scott Yanow calls it one of Burrell's best-known Blue Note sessions. Elvis Costello's 1981 album Almost Blue echoes its cover design, and Stevie Ray Vaughan recorded "Chitlins Con Carne" on The Sky Is Crying.
