Blue Note Tone Poet Series Mono 180g LP in Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is the mono Tone Poet edition of Blue Note BLP 1543, Kenny Burrell's second album for the label. Joe Harley produced the reissue, and Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI in Camarillo, California, and housed in a Stoughton Printing "Old Style" gatefold tip-on jacket. Inside the gatefold are black-and-white photographs from the sessions, among them Burrell at Audio-Video Studios in New York on March 12, 1956.

Blue Note launched the Tone Poet series in 2019, its 80th anniversary year. The idea came from label president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues of Music Matters, the label Harley co-founded, and Harley picks each title in the series himself.

The original LP appeared in 1957 in Blue Note's 1500 series, with Alfred Lion producing. Its cover drawing is by Andy Warhol, the first of three Blue Note covers he made with designer Reid Miles. The music comes from four separate 1956 sessions that put Burrell in a different setting each time.

Side A opens with Harold Arlen's "Get Happy," cut at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums and Candido on congas. Burrell plays the Gershwin song "But Not For Me" alone. "Mexico City," a Kenny Dorham tune, was taped live with the trumpeter's sextet at the Café Bohemia on May 31. The rest of the record dates from March 12 at Audio-Video Studios. Burrell and Flanagan play with bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Shadow Wilson on the Basie band number "Moten Swing" and Burrell's own "Cheeta." Tenor saxophonist Frank Foster then makes it a quintet for side B's last three tracks: Pettiford's "Now See How You Are," Burrell's "Phinupi" and Burton Lane's "How About You."
