180-Gram Black Vinyl 2LP in a Gatefold Jacket

Seven months after To Pimp a Butterfly arrived in March 2015, Interscope put it on vinyl: a gatefold double album on 180-gram black records, catalog number B0023464-01, released October 23, 2015. The sixteen songs sit across four sides, five on side A down to three on side D, and Mike Bozzi cut the masters at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Discogs entries for this pressing record a printing error that has carried through its repressings - inside the gatefold, the credits for "Momma" and "Hood Politics" are swapped.

The album is Kendrick Lamar's third, released on March 15, 2015 by Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath and Interscope, and the follow-up to good kid, m.A.A.d city. He recorded it between November 2012 and February 2015 at Chalice in Hollywood, Downtown in New York, House in Washington, D.C., Notifi in St. Louis and No Excuses in Santa Monica, with Dr. Dre and Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith as executive producers. Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Taz Arnold, Thundercat, Rahki, Josef Leimberg, Flying Lotus, Pharrell Williams, Boi-1da and Knxwledge produced, and Kamasi Washington, Martin and Sounwave wrote the string arrangements. George Clinton, Bilal, Anna Wise, Snoop Dogg, James Fauntleroy, Ronald Isley and Rapsody guest, and the closing "Mortal Man" sets Lamar's writing against excerpts from an interview Mats Nileskär recorded with Tupac Shakur for Sveriges Radio P3 in November 1994.

Lamar has said the record took its direction from a trip to South Africa, where he toured historic sites including Nelson Mandela's cell on Robben Island: "I felt like I belonged in Africa. I saw all the things that I wasn't taught."

It sold 324,000 copies in the United States in its first week and entered the Billboard 200 at number one, and it was also Lamar's first number-one album in the United Kingdom. The RIAA has certified it platinum. At the 2016 Grammy Awards it won Best Rap Album, "Alright" won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song, and "These Walls" won Best Rap/Sung Performance; the eleven nominations Lamar held that night were the most any rapper had received for a single ceremony. It won the 2015 Pazz & Jop critics poll in The Village Voice, and Rolling Stone placed it 19th in the 2020 revision of its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
