Luminessence Series Facsimile 3LP Box Set

ECM reissued Solo-Concerts Bremen / Lausanne on vinyl on October 27, 2023, as a facsimile 3LP box in its Luminessence series, fifty years after the original set. The three records sit in a hard clamshell box carrying the original cover design by Barbara and Burkhart Wojirsch, with a 12-page booklet, and the sticker on the box notes that they were cut from the original masters. The pressing is made in Germany.

The booklet carries a joint note from Jarrett and producer Manfred Eicher, who write that the album stays true to itself and to its audience, and that it captures the experience of those evenings almost as if the listener were in the hall.

Luminessence is ECM's audiophile vinyl reissue series, launched in April 2023 with Kenny Wheeler's Gnu High and Nana Vasconcelos's Saudades and named after Jarrett's 1975 album with Jan Garbarek. The label announced this box alongside those first titles as one of the series' facsimile editions.

Both concerts were recorded for radio. Lausanne came first, on March 20, 1973, at the Salle de Spectacles d'Epalinges for Radio Suisse Romande; Bremen followed on July 12 in the Kleiner Sendesaal of Radio Bremen. Between the two dates Jarrett played in the US with his American quartet. ECM had organized an eighteen-concert European tour for him that year, made up entirely of solo improvisation. The box keeps the original side order, with Bremen on sides A to C and Lausanne on sides D to F.

First issued in November 1973 as ECM 1035-37, it was Jarrett's first solo live album for the label, two years before The Koln Concert. ECM notes that the set was named recording of the year in publications from Time to Japan's Swing Journal, and it received the Grosser Deutscher Schallplattenpreis; in 1974 DownBeat ranked it the year's best jazz recording. In a Mojo survey of Jarrett's catalog, the Bremen-Lausanne box was voted number one. Manfred Eicher and Jarrett produced it, with Rolf Rockstroh engineering in Bremen and Pierre Grandjean and Alan Kobel in Lausanne.
